In their own words

Women and youth of Nagaland's Self-Help Groups on how the Mission changed the course of their lives.

  • Portrait of Chingchu Phom

My long cherished dream became a reality when I successfully established ‘Cherry Kids Play School’ in 2023, only because I took the right decision by joining the SHG under NSRLM. Cherry Kids Play School fosters to address the gap in early childhood education services in Yachem Village and promotes gender-inclusive education. I am happy because I can serve my community while teaching my own daughter and creating employment opportunities.

  • Portrait of Atsülu Thurr

Joining the Self-Help Group under NSRLM, DAY-NRLM transformed my life from a homemaker to a Master Bookkeeper, to a Bank Sakhi serving my entire community. Through the opportunities, training and confidence the Mission gave me, I have helped hundreds of SHG members access bank credit, financial services and social security benefits, while growing into a leader I never imagined I could become. Today, I proudly serve knowing that my journey has changed not only my family’s future but also the lives of many rural women in my block.

  • Portrait of BT Tomwang Wangsa Konyak

My dream of building a career in the hospitality industry became a reality through the DDU-GKY programme under MoRD & NSRLM. The training gave me the skills, confidence, and exposure to begin my career at JW Marriott, Pune, and today I am proud to serve as an F&B Attendant aboard the Costa Smeralda, a leading European cruise ship. This journey has transformed my life and shown me that the right opportunity and determination can open doors to a successful global career.

  • Portrait of Viketuno Edith Rutsa

A divorcee with 6 children, I was a daily wage labourer struggling to make ends meet. Since joining the SHG in 2018, today I humbly stand tall as a successful entrepreneur and a leader of the SHG — a member of the Executive Committee of the Niakracha Block Level Federation and shouldering the post of Treasurer. My life is a testament of how, with the right and timely support, a woman with the commitment and zeal can successfully take up multiple activities to earn and alleviate the standard of one's life.

  • Portrait of Rhucheu Marhu

The habit of savings and lending at nominal interest rates, inculcated along with the practice of developing Micro Credit Plans in our SHG, influenced me to a great extent to start my own business. My enterprise began from a petty shop into a General Store. The active involvement of my husband in my enterprise and the happiness my family experiences from its success encourage me further.

  • Empowerment begins within. Every woman holds the strength to rise above challenges and inspire change. Being a part of the NSRLM SHG has reinforced in me and our members that ‘empowered women empower women — together, we create a world where every dream can take flight’.
